This week we delved into the idea of tragedy. Tragedy can mean many things. It usually represents a piece of work that ends in a certain way to give us the feeling that comes with tragedies. We learned this week where the origins of tragedy came from, and how it can be interpreted. Each day we wrote a blog in reflection of what we learned about tragedies. Tragedies are interesting because people are intrigued and pleasured by watching others suffer. Humans enjoy watching other people suffer and fail, so much so that it is an actual genre of drama.
We learned this week that tragedy comes from a person trying to find their place in society and failing. We also learned that rather than believing that tragedies are only for the rich and famous, tragedy can happen to anyone at any time. Tragedy isn't "above" anyone. It is a part of life that can and will happen to anyone, rich or not.
A tragedy of the commons is when someone takes a groups resources for their own, leaving everyone else to suffer. These kinds of tragedies happen a lot on television, especially in shows such as The Walking Dead. I didn't even realize that these actions would be considered a tragedy until this week. I really look forward to learning more about tragedies and about how they relate to the literature we read today.
